Shell Connections is an annual festival of Youth Theatre, managed by the National Theatre.
Last year, in their first entry into the festival, the CATS youth theatre production of “
Chatroom” was selected for the regional showcase at the Theatre Royal, Bath.
This year (2006), the CATS group selected “The Shoemaker’s Incredible Wife” from the scripts offered by the festival organisers.
In general, the festival scripts are new plays, in this case, Lorca’s play was written in 1926, but the translation by Lucinda Coxon is new.
A combustible young woman and a staid old man are locked together in a marriage of tragicomic misery. Eventually, the husband heeds his wife's apparently heartfelt wish that he should leave her. But with her husband departed, the young wife apparently discovers a hitherto unimaginable depth of feeling for the absent man, and holds off a variety of suitors, until a strange travelling show arrives in the village.
